Party Wall Insulation

Insulation is sometimes installed close to a party wall, for reasons of soundproofing, particularly having regard to the use of the room concerned, and the use of the room next door.

It is sensible to have a specialist consider the source of the noise, and how it is being transferred, before any soundproofing works are carried out. Noise can come ‘through’ a wall, roof or floor structure, with the structure itself assisting in the transfer of noise.

Noise or sound can also be airborne, like music from a speaker being heard across a room.

In some cases, in order to be effective, party wall insulation isn’t fixed into the party wall. It is placed adjacent to the wall, and a structure built to obscure it.

It is not therefore always the case that the provision of party wall installation is ‘notifiable’ under the Act, this will depend on the design of the proposed works.

If, in installing the installation, the party wall needs to be cut into, or repaired, then a Notice will need to be served, and the Adjoining Owner(s) given the opportunity to respond to the Notice.
